My first running experience

It was a treadathon , a warm up event for Pinkathon which is being held in multiple cities across India to raise awareness for breast cancer among women . The team of Ace  Runners  was participating in the treadathon and my hubby requested me to take part as they were missing their one runner. I am no runner , in fact I was never athletic . I would be the last person to participate in any sporting even in school or college .But last few years I have been working out in the gym just to keep myself fit as diabetes runs in my family . And having a tough time during my pregnancy I have learnt that having good heath is not an option but a necessity .

Treadathon  is basically a marathon on treadmill . And you need to run on a treadmill continuously . So , the event was divided in two categories . First one was 12 athletes running for 12 hours  and second was 6 athletes running for 6 hours nonstop . My hubby was super excited . He is a fitness freak and a marathon runner too. So , when u have such vibrant energy at home you cannot remain untouched . We had packed our bags with necessary towels, medical kit and some spare clothes . The event was being held in Phoenix Marketcity , a huge mall in Bangalore and one of my favorite too . As soon as I reached the venue , I was taken aback and pleaded ,” R u kidding me ? I need to run on a treadmill in the central atrium with hundreds of eyes watching me “.  But hubby dear coaxed and cajoled , ” It ‘s nothing . You will enjoy it . See the other teams are running too . “At that time I just wanted to run away .But somehow i gathered my strength and reminded myself that I have come so far so at least I can just stay and watch . The energy was palpable and infectious with awesome tracks beings played in the background . Milind Soman playing the gracious host and obliging everyone asking for a snap . And then there was Zumba with Timtim sharma showing some great moves , enthralling everyone present there . I had never experienced such a vibrant and positive energy .

And when my turn came for running I was little nervous but I let myself loose to soak in the pulsating environment . And I ran for almost 1 hour 10 minutes with 2 breaks with an average speed of 6-7 . I was feeling good as I was not myself sure that I can do that in front of so many people . And the best reward I got when my hubby came and told me “You did great . I am so proud of you ” And I was in the moon , floating with the clouds . This one complement had made my day and answered all my effort. To top it all Bangalore runners smashed the current record of Treadathon India held by Delhi runners. They broke it by a whopping 5Km bringing their mileage of 12hrs to a grand total of 189.38K. The cheer , the laughter and the camaraderie uplifts the mood and you start seeing positive in everything around you.

I realized till now I was missing something in my life and am so glad that I went for this run. Our health is in our hands . And only you can work for your well being , nobody else can. So stop giving excuses and take out that me time for a sport/ exercise which you enjoy. Find your inspiration and GET , SET and GO.

An evening with Shashi Deshpande

It was a book reading event at one of my favorite libraries, Easy lib . Easylib is doing great job where they are bringing book lovers , authors and the readers at one roof . The book reading was by eminent author Shashi Deshpande  from her latest book Shadow Play .

Shashi Deshpande is a well known figure in the literary world . She has been writing from many decades , have also won Sahitya academy award and having heard her before , I had made up my mind to attend this event .

The event started with a introduction by Vani Mahesh , founder of Easylib . And after that Mrs shashi Deshpande read few excerpts from her latest book ” Shadowplay” . The crowd was an eclectic mix of writers , editors and book lovers . What followed was an animated discussion on the process of writing , the blurbs from the book and the inspiration behind the book . When one asked her how does the characters in the book start doing or behaving in a certain way and not the other way round , are there any parameters which makes her decide that . She pointed that though she creates the characters but slowly they start doing or behaving  in their own way and she only acts as a medium . I found that very intriguing .

Book Launch

The discussion then followed through the current indian fiction scene and some of the acclaimed work done by the indian writers . Many present there felt that there has been exponential increase  in  people expressing themselves and many new authors have come in the block but that is not the same case with readership . There was a stimulating discussion that the standard of writing has decreased and there are  books in market with very poor English  or poorly edited . In fact few people felt that the quality of writing has deteriorated in the recent times . What do you feel about the current Indian Writing scene ? And where do you see it going  ?Has any indian book inspired you lately ? I would love to hear your views too .

The Author , Shashi Deshpande
Listening with rapt attention
With Vani Mahesh

The evening ended with people getting signed copy of the book from their favorite author . It was lovely being a part of such thought provoking discussion and listening to one of my favorite author . A decade ago or so reading had really dwindled due to advent of Television and other electronic gadgets . But slowly with a change in indian fiction scene when many acclaimed authors came up with novels incorporating indian sensibilities , there has been an increase in both readership and authors . I feel this is a good sign and it will only get better with time . I am an optimist after all 🙂

It’s a small world.

It was one of those hot days , hot because it was still march.  The year was 1992 when  my annual exams were going to start in a week . One of my cousin from my mother’s side was fixed for a meeting with a prospective life partner .

Her name was Nidhi and I found her very good looking with a mole just above her lips and silky , shiny hair . She was all ready bathed , adorned in a mustard yellow saree chosen from my mother’s wardrobe and matching jewelry . There was commotion all around with variety of preparations at home for the groom and the family , home getting sprayed and scented with dad’s favorite perfume . And a bunch of flowers from the garden daisies ,cosmos , dahlia adorning one of the corner of the living room in a vase which my mother has supposedly picked from a trip to Darjeeling .

Soon the groom arrives with the family and my mother ask us to go and sit in the corner room. We could hear some muffled sounds , laughter and then the silence . Nidhi asks me to peek at the groom and though hesitant , i was curious how he looks  and the overall demeanor.  He was tall , lanky wearing specs and dressed in off white pants and a maroon shirt. He looked affable and found him handsome at my first evaluation .

After the snacks , tea was over it was time to meet  Nidhi with Anil . Yes I forgot to tell you the groom’s name was Anil Gupta . Everybody leaves the room so that they can talk to each other . Few hours  back when I was talking to Nidhi , i just wanted to know what are the things which she is looking in her  partner . And she starts that I want someone who can be friend , being faithful to her feelings , someone who loves reading and travelling and gives her own  space. And have mutual respect for each other ideas . I said , ” Amen Nidhi , you will get someone like that ”  After almost one hour when Nidhi finishes her talk and emerges from the room I found her reflective and in a pensive mood. With an inquisitive smile I ask  her hesitantly , ” So how did it go , and what you guys spoke to each other ?” Did you like him ? And I see her eyes on the verge of shedding tears .. I was troubled , apologetic too , ” Sorry don’t bother , You don’t need to tell me anything if you don’t like ” . Nidhi said , ” No no , actually , I did not like him , I felt that he is scrutinizing me , asking so many questions , was it some kind of interview or what ?”

After almost two months since this incident we were slated to go and attend marriage function in Patna . Nidhi was also supposed to come there with my uncle and aunt and we were excited that we will get to spend some time together . So , on the day of reception when we were all dressed up in our best attire and Nidhi was dressed up in a chiffon pink salwar suit and was looking ravishing. We were having good time with family and friends , suddenly i see a familiar face walking towards us . And , Lo this is none other than but Mr . Anil Gupta . And the first thing which crosses my mind , ” So what on earth he is doing here ? ” After exchanging friendly hellos he asks me politely if he can speak to my cousin in isolation. Mr.  Anil  Gupta happens to be the first cousin of the bride whose marriage function we came to attend .

And though Nidhi was signalling me to stay , i just walk away to give them some time . After almost 2 years of dating from their second meeting , they get married in a grand ceremony and soon get blessed with a beautiful daughter .They still happens to be one of the most loving couple I know.

Whenever I think of this incident , my mind hums , ” IT’S A SMALL WORLD “.

Looking forward and taking a stock of the year gone by !

Another new day , and a new year which has 365 opportunities to make you happy , sad , elated , loved and i can go on and on. But do we really have control on how we steer the incidents or happenings in our lives ?

Look inside and the answer will be big NO . But we definitely choose how we react to those incidents and how bravely we steer to come out unfazed with a renewed zeal . 2013 was a great year . I made some beautiful friends , had some interesting trips , found a new home at the blogging world , met some wonderful bloggers , ran my first marathon , worked for some of very commendable NGOs ( Sneha care , Bosco Mane ) . There were some tough times too as they say life after all is  not a bed of roses …. but I sailed through somehow with my inner strength and love from my near and dear ones.As I look forward in 2014 ,here is my bucket list…

1. Be always Happy and Outrageous  : Have you tried this ? Try this and you will be surprised how a smile can help you to sail through all your odds . It is so infectious that even the most dull soul cannot remain unfazed .And I want to cultivate this happy feeling in my day to day life.

2.Write , write and write more : Yes I want to write and write it all , blogs , articles and anything to do with words , words which come from the bottom of my heart .. words which can inspire … words which empathize … Words which can cry and laugh with you..Also my deep desire to see my name on print . How cool is that .. 😀

3. Travel , unravel and discover : I spent the last days of 2013 in the beautiful Kanyakumari .. the place which I was longing to go for a long time .. i have the deep desire to go to Kashmir … and literally can say that yes I have seen India … from kashmir to kanyakumari . Another wish is for my parents to take them on their first international trip.

4. Read my long list of books  : I love reading . And I have a long list of books which I wanted to read from long time . I just wish to find more time or manage well so that I can read those beautiful books . I really need to catch up on this .

5. More quality time with my child : My six year old is a bundle of energy . And loves to get my attention . I wish to be more patient with him . It is wonderful how a child can teach you valuable lessons in life . Try to be in his shoes and you will know how life becomes easy because a child knows how to live in the present moment and does not care about past or future.

6. Run more marathons : I want to be physically fit . I love going to gyms but I have been irregular . Last month I ran my first marathon . My hubby has been pestering me for such a long time . This time I relented and I was happy that I did . There is such a vibrant energy that makes you feel so buoyant . Also my son was the youngest to complete the marathon . It was such a satisfying start for me. See more pics here.

What is your bucket list ? Do you have something in common ?  I wish all of you a very happy and prosperous new year . And as I say always May we find the greater purpose of our life for which we are born with . Stay blessed and stay happy . From my heart to yours I wish you love ,love and more love.
